They basically inserted another structure into this old building without touching the existing walls, and then built a new roof over it all. It’s a beautiful re-use of an existing structure, even though some might call the old building run-down. But the glow of the lights coming from the interior, combined with the old stone facade . . . I’d live in this house in a heartbeat.

Felix Schramm, Omission @ Spy Numbers - Palais du Tokyo, Paris, July 2009

Ostensibly reminiscent of the late Gordon Matta-Clark’s “Anarchitecture”, Felix Schramm’s architectural installations lack the politicalized undertones of Matta-Clark, instead creating shocking juxtapositions between the decorous order of the museum and his violently alien insertions into the gallery environment. The objects enigmatic qualities compel the observer to approach and explore the object, eliciting contradicting feelings of discomfort as well as a curious amazement. While the concept of shockingly aberrant  art is nothing new in the art world, there is something particularly alluring about Schramm’s installations, they not only work at an inhabitable scale but their lack of discernible narrative or rhetoric makes them all the more mysterious and open to a purely visceral experience of their spatial and material qualities.

I’m reading Christian Norburg Schulz right now and having considerable nostalgia of my studies under Lance Lavine in Oaxaca.  It is interesting to learn a design theory without having it annunciated, but then later approach it solely as a theoretical construct based on linguistics.
